Overland AI Is the First Ground Autonomy Company to Prime a Production Award

We reached this milestone after years of testing our technology in conditions designed to expose every flaw, with the Marines taking note of our track record and deciding it was time to buy.
The U.S. Marine Corps awarded Overland AI™ a $20 million production Other Transaction Authority (OTA) to build and deliver autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs). The initial award was funded through the Pentagon’s Accelerate the Procurement and Fielding of Innovative Technologies (APFIT) program, an office purpose-built to get capable technology into warfighters’ hands faster than the traditional acquisition system allows.
The path from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) prototype to production OTA took less than three years for Overland AI. That is far from typical, and we are proud of it.
What PM GBAD Needs
The drone threat has changed the battlefield faster than expected, with ground troops more exposed to adversarial threats than ever before. The Marines responsible for shooting down enemy unmanned aerial systems (UAS) need to get their counter-drone systems as close to the threat as possible. The problem is that doing so means putting people in harm’s way.
The Marine Corps’ answer to this challenge is the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS), a premier counter-UAS system.
Our autonomous ground vehicles provide ground mobility solutions capable of moving payloads forward in contested environments. One operator can position multiple autonomous vehicles throughout terrain that would strand most other platforms because GPS is denied and jamming is constant.
As the UAS threat grows, so does the importance of getting ground autonomy right.
How We Got Here
Overland AI was founded by a team in the trenches of DARPA’s RACER (Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency) program, the most demanding ground autonomy competition the government has ever held.
The capability that we built through DARPA RACER formed the foundation of our commercial autonomy stack. We expanded into hardware by building custom AGVs from the ground up, designed for the most dangerous jobs across the military and commercial sectors.
We have participated in adversarial government testing with DARPA, DIU, the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, SOCOM, and OUSW R&E.
Every test was conceived to break our technology, but it outperformed.
Built to Scale
The Marine Corps has sent a powerful signal across the board that this technology has a critical role to play in the future force.
The base award of the APFIT OTA is $20 million, but the agreement can be modified to add funding and additional Department of War customers. This reflects the Marine Corps’ intent to field the capability at scale over the longer term.
Buying in volume lowers costs, speeds up delivery times, and lets us build stronger relationships with suppliers. We project a significant drop in cost per vehicle as production scales, meaning that the government can buy more capability per dollar over time.
For fiscal year 2027, the Marine Corps has requested $1.2 billion for Ground-Based Air Defense (GBAD), more than double the $620 million allocated in fiscal year 2026.
As the UAS threat continues to grow across every theater, we expect demand for autonomous ground solutions to follow. This contract is just the foundation.
What This Tells Us About Defense Technology
Overland AI is three years old. Based in Seattle, the company is American-owned and venture-backed.
Production OTAs do not typically go to companies like us. The fact that this one did says something about where the acquisition system is heading. It also speaks to the Marine Corps’ confidence in our technology, and our ability to navigate the Warfighting Acquisition System.
Ground autonomy has advanced more slowly than comparable aerial and maritime efforts, but that is changing. The use of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) in Ukraine has ended whatever debate remained over whether this technology matters on the battlefield.
With fully autonomous ground vehicles, the U.S. is positioned to supersede what is being fielded in Ukraine. Overland’s AGVs can navigate unforgiving off-road terrain on their own by sensing the environment around them, even in GPS-denied areas. AGVs also enable a single person to direct multiple systems at once, multiplying force.
By contrast, the typical UGV requires remote control or tele-operation, making it vulnerable to disruption by electronic warfare. UGVs also require direct oversight by a remote human operator, a dependency that can create risk.
We built this company to ensure that the United States leads the way in ground autonomy. This contract validates that we can, and the Marine Corps will be among the first in the world to put fully autonomous ground vehicles into operational use alongside its premier counter-drone system.
With our full-scale production effort, the ground has just begun to move.
